Coconut Oil

A Brief History of Fractionated Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been used for thousands of years across tropical regions of Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, India, and the Caribbean. Traditionally, coconut oil was valued for its moisturizing, protective, and conditioning properties for both skin and hair.

As grooming and cosmetic science advanced, formulators sought a way to keep coconut oil’s benefits while eliminating its drawbacks—namely its heavy feel and tendency to solidify at cooler temperatures. This led to the development of fractionated coconut oil, a refined version designed specifically for modern skincare and grooming.

Fractionated coconut oil gained popularity in the late 20th century as the demand for lightweight, stable, non-greasy carrier oils increased. By isolating the most beneficial fatty acids, fractionated coconut oil became a staple in professional grooming products, massage oils, and cosmetic formulations worldwide.

How Fractionated Coconut Oil Is Made (The Process)

1. Coconut Cultivation & Harvesting
Coconuts are harvested from mature coconut palms grown in tropical climates. The white coconut meat is removed and dried or processed fresh.

2. Oil Extraction
The coconut meat is pressed to extract virgin coconut oil. This oil contains a mix of fatty acids with different molecular weights.

3. Fractionation
The extracted coconut oil undergoes a controlled process of heating and cooling to separate the fatty acids. Long-chain fatty acids (which solidify) are removed, leaving behind medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs).

4. Filtration & Purification
The remaining liquid oil is filtered and purified to ensure clarity, stability, and a neutral scent.

5. Quality Control
The final product is a clear, odorless oil that remains liquid at all temperatures and has an extended shelf life.

Why Fractionated Coconut Oil Is Different

Unlike traditional coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil contains mostly caprylic and capric fatty acids, which are lighter, faster-absorbing, and highly stable.

Key benefits

  • Always liquid—never solidifies
