Argan Oil

A Brief History of Argan Oil

Argan oil originates exclusively from Morocco, where the argan tree has grown for centuries in the arid regions of the country. For generations, Berber communities have relied on argan oil as a vital resource—used for skin care, hair conditioning, healing, and nutrition.

Traditionally, argan oil was produced by hand, a labor-intensive process often carried out by women in village cooperatives. The oil became known locally as “liquid gold” due to its rarity, value, and remarkable ability to protect skin and hair from the harsh desert climate.

In the late 20th century, argan oil gained international recognition when scientific research confirmed its high concentration of vitamin E, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. This global demand helped establish fair-trade cooperatives, preserving traditional methods while supporting local economies. Today, argan oil is considered one of the most premium and effective ingredients in grooming and skincare.

How Argan Oil Is Made (The Process)

1. Argan Tree Cultivation
Argan trees grow slowly and only in specific regions of Morocco. The trees are drought-resistant and play a critical role in preventing desertification.

2. Harvesting the Fruit
When ripe, argan fruit is collected from the ground after naturally falling from the tree. The outer pulp is removed to reveal the hard nut inside.

3. Cracking the Nuts
The nuts are traditionally cracked by hand to extract the kernels. This step requires skill and precision and is still practiced in many cooperatives today.

4. Cold Pressing
The kernels are mechanically cold-pressed to extract the oil. This method preserves the oil’s nutrients, antioxidants, and natural scent.

5. Filtration & Quality Control
The oil is filtered to remove any remaining solids, resulting in a golden, nutrient-dense oil suitable for cosmetic use.
