The idea for Hey Man Nice Beard began in 2016—not in a corporate boardroom, around a conference table, or as part of a carefully researched business plan. It began with a beard, a memorable phrase, and the belief that men deserved grooming products made with more purpose.
By 2017, that idea had a name: Hey Man Nice Beard.
The name captured something familiar. Any man who has grown a noticeable beard has probably heard a version of it before—a compliment offered by a friend, a stranger, or another bearded man who understands the commitment involved.
“Hey man, nice beard.”
It was simple, genuine, and memorable. More importantly, it represented the kind of company the brand could become: approachable, confident, distinctly masculine, and built around a genuine appreciation for the bearded lifestyle.
At first, Hey Man Nice Beard was more of a vision than a finished business. The name existed, and the potential was easy to see, but turning that potential into something real would take time. Like many good ideas, it had to wait while life, work, family, and other responsibilities demanded attention.
Still, the idea never completely disappeared.
Over the years, it remained in the background—a name waiting for the right product, a brand waiting for its identity, and a business waiting for the right moment to grow.
Creating Something Worth Putting the Name On
When the time came to begin developing the products, the goal was not simply to place the Hey Man Nice Beard name on an ordinary bottle of beard oil. The product needed to represent the larger purpose behind the company.
It needed to be useful.
It needed to feel honest.
It needed to smell masculine without becoming overpowering.
Most importantly, it needed to be something the company could stand behind.
That meant starting with the foundation of every good beard oil: the carrier oils. A beard may be what everyone sees, but healthy-looking facial hair begins with caring for the skin beneath it. The formula needed to moisturize dry skin, help reduce the uncomfortable itch that often comes with growing a beard, soften coarse facial hair, and leave the beard looking cared for without feeling excessively heavy or greasy.
Selecting the oils was not simply a matter of choosing whatever was convenient. Each oil needed to serve a purpose. Some were selected for their ability to absorb into the skin. Others contributed conditioning, softness, manageability, or a smoother feel throughout the beard.
The objective was balance.
A formula that was too light might disappear before it could provide lasting conditioning. A formula that was too heavy could leave the beard feeling oily. The right blend had to fall somewhere between the two—substantial enough to nourish the beard but refined enough for daily use.
Once that foundation began taking shape, another challenge emerged.
What should Hey Man Nice Beard smell like?
Finding the Original Scent
Creating a signature scent is different from creating a scent that merely smells pleasant. A signature scent has to carry the personality of the entire brand. It needs to create an impression while remaining wearable. It should be recognizable without becoming distracting, and distinctive enough that someone may eventually associate that aroma with the product itself.
The first Hey Man Nice Beard scent could not feel like an imitation of something already on a store shelf. It needed its own character.
The early experiments were part inspiration and part discovery. Essential oils were measured, blended, tested, and adjusted. Some combinations smelled promising in the bottle but changed after being applied to the beard. Others opened strongly but faded too quickly. A few ingredients competed with one another instead of working together.
Each attempt revealed something important.
The process was not about finding the strongest fragrance. It was about finding the right relationship between the different notes.
Cedarwood became the natural foundation. It brought the dry, grounded character of freshly worked wood and the unmistakable strength of the outdoors. It smelled rugged and familiar—the kind of scent that belonged in a workshop, beside a campfire, or along the edge of a forest.
But cedarwood alone did not tell the entire story.
Bergamot added brightness. Its clean citrus character opened the blend and kept the wood notes from feeling too dark or heavy. It introduced a refined edge without taking away from the masculine foundation.
Lavender brought another dimension. Although often misunderstood as merely floral, lavender can give a men’s grooming fragrance a clean, traditional character. Used carefully, it helped smooth the transition between the brightness of bergamot and the strength of cedarwood.
Amyris completed the blend with a softer, warm woodiness. It helped deepen the scent and gave the other notes a more unified finish.
Together, the oils began to form something greater than their individual parts.
Cedarwood provided strength.
Bergamot brought energy.
Lavender contributed balance.
Amyris added depth and warmth.
The result was not loud or complicated for the sake of being complicated. It was clean, woody, confident, and unmistakably masculine. It felt both rugged and refined—equally appropriate for a man working outdoors, running a business, attending church, spending time with family, or preparing for an important evening.
After different versions, careful adjustments, and repeated testing, the fragrance finally reached the point where it felt complete.
This was not simply another scent in the collection.
This was the scent that represented the beginning.
It became Nice Beard – Original.
More Than a Beard Oil
The Original scent came to represent more than the aroma inside the bottle. It became a connection between the idea born in 2016 and the company that idea would eventually become.
The name Hey Man Nice Beard had waited years for the right product to carry it. Nice Beard – Original became that product—a reminder that meaningful things are not always created overnight.
Sometimes an idea arrives before the opportunity.
Sometimes a name exists before the business.
Sometimes the vision remains quiet for years before it finally becomes clear.
The Original scent carries that journey in every bottle. Its woody foundation reflects strength and dependability. Its citrus brightness reflects momentum and new beginnings. Its clean, balanced character represents the belief that masculine grooming can be rugged without being careless and refined without losing its identity.
It was created for men who understand that growing a beard is only the beginning. A beard must also be maintained, conditioned, and worn with intention.
That philosophy would eventually become central to Hey Man Nice Beard: a beard is not an accessory added in the morning and removed at the end of the day. It is part of the man wearing it. It reflects patience, character, individuality, and commitment.
As the brand grew, new scent ideas began to take shape. Each would develop its own personality and tell its own story. There would be fragrances inspired by citrus groves, coastal air, mountain forests, traditional barbershops, aged bourbon, tobacco barns, sandalwood, and the outdoors.
But every collection needs a beginning.
Nice Beard – Original is that beginning.
The Scent That Started It All
From an idea formed during 2016 and 2017 to a finished fragrance created years later, the story of Nice Beard – Original is ultimately a story about persistence.
The business did not appear fully formed. The formula was not discovered in a single attempt. The scent was not created by accident. Each part was developed gradually, shaped by experience and guided by a clear standard: if a product was going to carry the Hey Man Nice Beard name, it needed to deserve it.
Nice Beard – Original honors the first idea while establishing the foundation for everything that follows. It is rooted in cedarwood, lifted by bergamot, balanced by lavender, and finished with the warmth of amyris.
It is rugged but approachable.
Traditional but distinctive.
Strong but never unnecessarily overpowering.
Most of all, it is original—not because it was the easiest scent to create, but because it was the one that finally captured what Hey Man Nice Beard was meant to become.
A company created for men who take pride in their beards, care about what they put on their skin, and believe that personal grooming should be straightforward, effective, and purposeful.
Years after the first idea was formed, the phrase still says everything it needs to say:
Hey man, nice beard.
